During this time, males may fly long distances in search of females who are fertile. Because of its distinctive wings, this animal is easily identified by its distinctive appearance.Īfter emerging from the cocoon, Luna moths are metamorphosed into moths. In about three weeks, the insect emerges from its shell as a moth. Once the caterpillar has filled up on these plants, it begins the process of developing a cocoon. Because the larval stage of a Luna does not produce mouths, it generates energy by storing the stored fats. A pupa may enter dormancy during winter, and it may take up to nine months to emerge from the cocoon as an adult Luna moth. The pupal phase usually takes about two weeks in normal weather conditions. Adult Luna moths do not eat anything for 10 days during their growth, so they do not have a mouth. They can live for only 10 days after hatching from their eggs and can be metamorphosed for up to 12 months before becoming adult winged creatures. Saturniidae is a family of giant silkworm moths, which is related to the Luna moth family. Once they mature, luna moths only live for around a week, during which time they mate and lay eggs so that the cycle can begin anew. They shed their skin between each instar, and each time they grow larger and develop more features until they reach their final, adult form. After hatching from their eggs, larvae go through six instars, or growth stages. Luna moth larvae take around six weeks to mature, though this can vary depending on the temperature and availability of food.
